Breach

Breach by Shanan Haislip

Sun and sea play so well together.

"Breach" is quite a large canvas, measuring 24"x48", and is inspired by the way sunrises and sunsets light seawater and jetties in beautiful pinks, peaches and purples. The setting of this work reflects my childhood summers spent on the beach in Lavallette, New Jersey. This expanse of the Jersey Shore was punctuated by rock jetties that emerged from the sand at the high tide mark, and marched out into the Atlantic Ocean, where the rocks themselves turned from ebony to mossy green as they met the water. The rock jetties have since been removed as the Shore reconfigures its beaches in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy. Those beautiful rock jetties now exist only in pictures and memories.

Note: I finished and signed "Breach" on the morning of July 1, 2020. Later that same day, I visited the doctor's office to hear the results of recent tests, and received the news that I had breast cancer. It was a coincidence, but these two events are forever linked in my mind. As a result, a percentage of the sale of each "Breach" print will be donated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
